Flats Fishing with a Fly - Florida Keys

You can enjoy fly fishing in the flats of the Florida Keys year round, no matter your level of experience. The most sought after species of fish in the flats is the tarpon. Usually the months of May and June bring on onslaught of anglers in search of the mighty tarpon.

Warm weather fronts are the best for tarpon fishing, because when a cold weather front blows into the flats fishing for tarpon drops to nearly nothing. But the good news is other species will move in so you can continue to enjoy the fishing. Cooler water attracts baitfish like the Redfin Needlefish. These will also bring in mackerel and barracuda. It is not unusual for sharks to enter in the flats to feed on these larger fish. Catching a Blacktip, Hammer, or Tiger shark on the fly can occur even on the shallow waters of the flats.
